I attended a virtual marketing workshop last week. The theme was how to market our businesses right now. How do we move forward? And the overall message at this workshop was this: we need to stop saying ‘in these difficult times’. We need to really think about our audience. What do they need right now?
I was recently doing some research for one of my clients; the theme of our campaign is “The Comeback”. I searched for things that are making a comeback. It was so entertaining! So fun to see the things that are being popular again: milk delivery, the mullet, drive-in theaters. And then there were some not-so-great things: cigarettes, risky borrowing, wallpaper and…maybe the mullet falls in this not-so-great category as well!
In addition to being positive and using humor, we need to be sensitive and kind. We need to not assume we know what our clients are feeling. It’s a good time to have a conversation and ask questions. We don’t need a reminder that things are rough; we need hope and positivity and a little humor. And maybe cookies and a glass of milk!
